Klis Fortress (City of Meereen), A Perfect Day Trip from Split

What’s better than spending a beautiful sunny day visiting a medieval fortress that just so happens to feature on one of your favourite ever TV series? Let me tell you: spending a beautiful sunny day visiting a medieval fortress that just so happens to feature on one of your favourite ever TV series and having the place all to yourself. That’s what’s better.  Just a few miles northeast of Split, Klis Fortress is perched neatly atop a hill overlooking the village of Klis, like a dragon keeping watch over its eggs. Or, you know, an animal that actually exists keeping watch…

A Brief Intro to Split (the City, Not the Movie)

The second largest city in Croatia, but not exactly what I’d consider big as far as cities go, Split is a coalescence of old and new, history and modernity, blue skies and limestone structures. It’s a bit of a contradiction to itself really. You have the looming modern-day ships and ferries docked in the port on one side, and the crumbling centuries-old ruins on the other, the two barely a stone’s throw from one another. Then there’s the mountains and the luscious greenery bordering the city almost every way you look, save one, which is designated to the almost unbelievably turquoise…

It’s Been Three Months

When you’re waiting for something, eagerly anticipating the arrival of your favourite season or perhaps a much awaited holiday, three months seems like an absolute age. In the grand scheme of things, three months isn’t very long. The average life expectancy of a British female is 82.8 years. Which is to say, if I’m your average female (and trust me, I most certainly am) then I’ll probably live to see a grand total of 331 lots of three months. It seems like a lot of time, right? But I promise you, it’s not. What were you doing towards the end…

In Pictures: 48 Hours in Dubrovnik

It’s absolutely crazy that this time two months ago I’d just touched down in Montenegro, at the start of my little solo jaunt to the Balkans. What’s even crazier is that now, two months down the line, I’ve only actually managed to publish five posts from that trip. That’s five out of at least fifteen I have tentatively planned in my own head. So yeah, have no fear because there’s plenty more to come my lovely little bunch of fromage frais. The last two posts have been very word-heavy and very Game of Thrones heavy, and to be honest Westeros is…

Trsteno Arboretum: The Palace Gardens of the Red Keep

Hands up who knows what an arboretum is. I don’t know about you, but all I’m hearing right now is a whole bunch of crickets and maybe the faint echo of tumbleweed drifting past in the wind. An arboterum, for those of you who don’t know, is, according to Oxford Dictionaries, a botanical garden devoted to trees. Although, for the sake of fluffing this piece up a bit, let’s take a look at this bloody fantastic description provided by the Free Dictionary: A place where an extensive variety of woody plants are cultivated for scientific, educational, and ornamental purposes I guess…
