Remember the days when Facebook, Bebo and MySpace were filled with notes full of questions you answer about yourself? I loved them! I never actually put my answers out into the World Wide Web, but I would always copy and paste the questions and fill in my own answers in a Word document, save it and then delete it the next day. Now I’ve written that in a public forum, I realise how truly sad I was.

The Liebster Award is like a more sophisticated, blogging version of those notes and I’ve always wanted one! So thank you thank you thank you Meanderwithmeg, your nomination really made my day!

What is the Liebster Award?

The Liebster Award is given by bloggers to bloggers to recognize great blogs and the hard work we put into them. It helps to discover new blogs and to build a sense of community in the blogging world! Kind of like when you’re climbing a mountain, run out of steam towards the top and someone on their way back down tells you you’re almost there. Camaraderie in blogging!

What is the primary reason for starting your blog?

For a brief space of time back in 2011, when I spent the summer living and volunteering in Peru, I started a blog over on Blogger. The intention was to update it regularly so family and friends back home could keep up-to-date with my adventures without me having to constantly spam Facebook, but it didn’t quite work out. I wrote about 3 posts. Nobody actually read a word of it, and as I was my own audience I gave up. Fast forward to 2013 and the start of my Year Abroad at Uni. Again, the blog was supposed to keep family and friends updated back home but with the exception of my first day when I guilt-tripped everyone I knew into reading (to this very day it remains the day with most views) nobody actually bothered. Except Jess James. Hi Jess James! So yeah, the primary reason was to update real-life friends & family, but that kind of failed. Now it’s just because I like it, and in years to come I want to have something to look back on and remember all the little ‘irrelevant at the time but so important in retrospect’ parts of my travels!

How often do you post content on your blog?

I have been known to go months with no new content…but I’m learning! Nowadays I try to publish something at least once every 3-4 days, although having not left the country in almost 18months, I’m kind of running out of juice.

Is there a story behind your blog name?

Well, I am from Wales and I go Wherever in the world I can get to!

Do you hire people for writing content/creating photography and videos?

No. All photos used on the site are either photos taken by me, photos taken of me or stock photos available to all. In the future maybe I’ll be interested in not necessarily hiring people, but perhaps collaborating with some other travel bloggers. For now, though, I’m happy with my own recollections and half-assed attempts at being artistic.

An attempt at taking photos..

When you were young, what did you want to grow up to be?

Growing up I wanted to be everything: a builder, a teacher, an author, a waitress, a barman, a fast food worker, a receptionist and a doctor to name a few. Other than author and doctor, I’ve managed to be all them in some capacity, and to be frank grown up jobs are not as fun as they seem.

What motivates you to blog?

The thought that there’s actually a handful of people out there who want to read what I write, and who are actually interested in what I’ve been doing, I guess. In real life I hear ‘you talk a lot of crap’ so often. It’s not in a mean way, and mostly ends with a chuckle, but it gets boring. It’s nice to actually have people taking in what I have to say because they want to and not just because they’re stuck in the same room as me with no escape.

What is your ideal morning routine?

Not waking up to an alarm all nice and cosy would be a good start. I’m not a breakfast person. In fact, I’m not really a morning person full stop. To be totally honest, my ideal morning routine would be waking up at 11am, staying in bed for an hour and then getting up, by which point it would no longer be morning.

If you could have one superpower, what would it be?

I’d be like Hayden Panetterie in Heroes and have self-healing powers! That way fear of injury or pain would never hold me back from doing something!

What is your favourite country?

My go-to answer is Peru. Whenever anybody asks me this question, I always say Peru, because Peru to me feels like home away from home. Although these days I’m inclining towards saying Jordan… not because I loved it more than Peru, but because there’s something about the country that draws you in and has you planning your next trip before you finish the first one!

What is your favourite thing to do abroad?

Eat. I love discovering local cuisines and bringing home new recipes that I intend to recreate one day but never actually follow through. Street food is the best in any country.
